چکیده

We consider the problem of unconstrained minimization of a smooth function in the derivativefree setting. In particular, we study the direct search method (of directional type). Despite relevant research activity spanning several decades, until recently no complexity guarantees— bounds on the number of function evaluations needed to find a satisfying point—for methods of this type were established. Moreover, existing complexity results require long proofs and the resulting bounds have a complicated form. In this paper we give a very brief and insightful analysis of direct search for nonconvex, convex and strongly convex objective function, based on the observation that what is in the literature called an “unsuccessful step”, is in fact a step that can drive the analysis. We match the existing results in their dependence on the problem dimension (n) and error tolerance ( ), but the overall complexity bounds are much simpler, easier to interpret, and have better dependence on other problem parameters. In particular, we show that the number of function evaluations needed to find an -solution is O(n/ ) (resp. O(n log(1/ ))) for the problem of minimizing a convex (resp. strongly convex) smooth function. In the nonconvex smooth case, the bound is O(n/ ), with the goal being the reduction of the norm of the gradient below .

Simple Complexity Analysis of Simplified Direct Search

We consider the problem of unconstrained minimization of a smooth function in the derivativefree setting using. In particular, we propose and study a simplified variant of the direct search method (of direction type), which we call simplified direct search (SDS). Unlike standard direct search methods, which depend on a large number of parameters that need to be tuned, SDS depends on a single sc...

An Investigation into the Effects of Joint Planning on Complexity, Accuracy, and Fluency across Task Complexity

The current study aimed to examine the effects of strategic planning, online planning, strategic planning and online planning combined (joint planning), and no planning on the complexity, accuracy, and fluency of oral productions in two simple and complex narrative tasks. Eighty advanced EFL learners performed one simple narrative task and a complex narrative task with 20 minutes in between. Th...

Armentum: a hybrid direct search optimization methodology

Design of experiments (DOE) offers a great deal of benefits to any manufacturing organization, such as characterization of variables and sets the path for the optimization of the levels of these variables (settings) trough the Response surface methodology, leading to process capability improvement, efficiency increase, cost reduction. Unfortunately, the use of these methodologies is very limite...
